Headquartered in Utrecht, The Netherlands, The IDH (Sustainable Trade Initiative) was established by the Dutch government in 2009 to help improve the sustainability of international supply chains. IDH accelerates and up-scales sustainable trade by building impact oriented coalitions of front running multinationals, civil society organizations, governments and other stakeholders. Through convening public and private interests, strengths and knowledge, IDH programs help create shared value for all partners. This will help make sustainability the new norm and will deliver impact on the Millennium Development goals.

IDH convenes coalitions of front running companies, civil society organizations and governments to transform markets towards sustainable production and consumption worldwide. That will deliver impact on the Millennium Development Goals 1 (poverty reduction), 7 (safeguarding the environment) and 8 (fair and transparent trade).

The scale on which IDH operates derives from the concept of working with private companies who bring in funds, entrepreneurship and procurement power, governments that add legislation, laws, regulations and funds, and civil society that brings in know-how, networks, local expertise and credibility.

With a 105 M euro match funding grant from the Dutch Ministery for Development Cooperation IDH organizes scoping, development and implementation of public private, precompetitive market transformation programs in 16 sectors. The IDH investments in market transformation programs are 1:1 match funded by private companies.
