Women's Organization for Socio-Cultural Awareness (WOSCA)

WOSCA is a voluntary non-profit organization founded in Keonjhar in 1993. Registered under the Societies Registration Act and FCRA, WOSCA is committed to the upfliftment and empowerment of the rural population – especially of Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, Primitive Tribes and Other Backward Classes – in Keonjhar District.

Keonjhar District in Northern Orissa is a tribal dominated area with more than 70 % of the population living below the Poverty Line. Most of them are small and marginalized farmers or landless agricultural laborers, which leaves them highly dependant on natural resources and climatic conditions.

Forest degradation, excessive mining, declining productivity of land, weak functioning of the Local Governance System and lacking accountability of Government officials are worsening the situation of the rural population.

Since 1993, WOSCA has continuously expanded its reach, covering today Banspal, Keonjhar, Saharpada, Patna, Joda, Hatadihi, Harichandanpur and Ghatagoan, Jhumpura and Champua block of Keonjhar District with a total population of 25 589 households in 219 villages.

Mission
