Tsogang's Background:

Tsogang was established in February 1994 as Tsogang Rural Development Agency cc, closed corporation. The nature of its work and the fact that it relies to a certain extend on donor funding meant that section 21 company was more appropriate structure for the organisation. The name was changed to Tsogang Water and Sanitation and the company was registered as a non-profit company under section 21 of the South African companies act on 7 July 1995.

For the first year and half much time was spent in establishing the organisation and raising intial finance. The first offices were rented from one of its members in Yeoville, Johannesburg. When the organisation's first funding was received from (Kagiso Trust) the office was moved to Tzaneen in the then Northern Province. It was felt that this was a more appropriate location since all the project engaged in were in Limpopo Province and this made better financial sense. Later the office moved to the Tzaneng Mall and subsequently to Peace Street. 

The first few projects Tsogang engaged in were carried over from work done by members when they were employed at RAC and later Medicines Sans Frontiers (MSF) the French relief agency. These were Mafefe, Lebvesane and Manare Maroge in Lebowa and Malamulele in Gazankulu.

In March 1995 the first six staff members were employed full time with funds provided by KT and USAID. Prior to this time, members of Tsogang worked part time on a fee paying agency basis. During May and June 1995, contact was made with other rural communitites  in the Bavaria and Groothoek regoins who were seeking assistance with obtaining basic services.

The purpose of Tsogang Water and Sanitation is to assist marginalised people gain access to expertise and training on community organisation skills, while accessing basic water and sanitation services in line with the principles outlined in the Reconstruction and Development Programme of the Government of the National Unity.

Board of Directors 2015:

Tsogang means "wake up" in Sotho, one of the languages of the Limpopo province in South Africa.

They see a South Africa that can raise from the southern tip of Africa to become a leader in the development field, they see 50 plus million people who face the daily challenge of poverty, disease, unemployment, hunger, poor sanitation, degraded and polluted environment as a challenge that is “do able”

They are thankful to their sponsors, friends, donors and volunteers for their diligence and tenacity in improving peoples lives. They believe in making every drop count 75% of all funding goes to improving the lives of others , 25% to build, train, mentor and monitor and aftercare management of programmes.
