The unmistakable sound of boy choirs has fascinated for centuries. With the founding of the singers of the Evangelical Reformed Church Basel-Stadt in 1927, the city of Basel also received "their" boys' choir. Since the 1970s, the choir Knabenkantorei Basel (KKB) is called and is confessional and institutionally independent. KKB is firmly anchored in the Basel region. Twice a week, about 70 singers from all over northwestern Switzerland and the neighboring countries come together in the venerable Bischofshof on the Basel cathedral hill for rehearsals. The approximately 40 boys and 30 male voices are dedicated to both spiritual and secular literature. The repertoire ranges from a cappella works of the Renaissance to the great oratorios of the Romantic period, to folk songs and popular catchy tunes.

KKB performs several times a year in the Basel region and performs in worship services of all denominations. Recent highlights include the performances of Mendelssohn's Elias (2015), Carl Orff's Carmina Burana (2016), and Handel's Messiah (2017). Alexander Grychtolik's reconstruction of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Markus-Passion" (2014) has been released on CD on the label Rondeau Production.

As a rule, KKB leaves the home country once a year and acts as a musical ambassador for Switzerland and the cultural city of Basel all over the world. Concert tours recently took the choir to Ukraine (2012), Rome (2013), Canada (2014), Estonia (2015) and the Czech Republic and Slovakia (2017).

The KKB keeps following invitations to renowned music festivals at home and abroad. At the Lucerne Festival, the choir performed with the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under Mariss Jansons. In Luxembourg, KKB performed with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra under Michael Tilson Thomas. Soloists of the KKB regularly organize solo opera and concert performances like the three boys in Mozart's "Magic Flute" at home and abroad.

The high musical level of KKB is ensured by working with qualified and committed music educators. The young singers will be prepared for singing in a concert choir in the stages early course (3 to 5-year-old boys), preliminary course (5- to 7-year-old boys) and basic course (7 years and older). The sound musical education includes ear and voice training, leaf singing, music theory, choir singing and solo singing. Even after the transition to the concert choir, all singers are individually cared for and supported. Numerous former singers of the KKB have embarked on a professional musician career.

Since 2017, the KKB has been under the direction of Oliver Rudin, who in his youth himself went through the choir school of the KKB and sang in choir for more than 10 years.
