Child Family Health International (CFHI)

Child Family Health International (CFHI) is the leading nongovernmental organization (NGO) placing health science students on global health education programs in ways that are socially responsible and financially just. We model best global health education practices which demonstrate a priority commitment to community engagement and local integrity. CFHI is an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the ECOSOC of the United Nations.

CFHI was founded by Evaleen Jones, MD while she was a medical student at Stanford University School of Medicine. After spending several months in rural and underserved parts of Ecuador she realized the unique value of this life transforming experience and wanted it to be available for all students interested in becoming health professionals. CFHI has since grown and now offers 20+ programs in Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, Bolivia, and South Africa.

Our global family of committed professionals and students work at the grassroots level to promote the health of the world community through:

1. Global Health Immersion Programs--Sustainable and financially just programs/internships geared towards students of the health sciences (pre-med, pre-health, nursing, medical school, Residents, P.A., MPH) that focus on increasing cultural competency in the health setting

2. Community Initiatives -- Healthcare for underserved communities through projects created by local medical professionals and clinics

OUR APPROACH

foster learning and service that sparks transformational personal change for all involved
work to achieve sustainable solutions in healthcare services and disease prevention
emphasize respect and understanding across cultures
facilitate the sharing of medical resources, knowledge, and experience
give priority to underserved communities

FAST FACTS ABOUT CFHI

Our overhead is 7%. Charity Navigator is America's premier independent charity evaluator. In 2008, Charity Navigator awarded CFHI our fifth consecutive 4-star rating--the highest available--due to our low overhead and high efficiency. In the US, less than 3% of charities achieve this accolade.
CFHI works at 20+ sites in 5 countries with over 250 partners and has enrolled students from over 35 countries, with 6,000+ alumni to date. We have also partnered with leading universities, such as the University of California at Davis, Stanford University School of Medicine and Duke University's School of Nursing to create institutional programs that leverage the academic pedigree of the campus with the deep and longstanding relationships CFHI has cultivated with the community.
CFHI supports locally devised community health projects in all of the countries where we are active—some of them award-winning—and have collaborated with our partners to offer professional development opportunities that not only address the issue of brain drain but also provide sustainable resources and trainings.
Our Recover program (1995 - 2008) transported more than $8 million worth of recovered medical supplies and equipment to underserved and disaster-stricken communities throughout the world.  CFHI continues to send shipments of equipment and supplies abroad.
