Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc. (House with No Steps) is a rehabilitation and skills training centre which was founded in 1973 to provide skills training and special education to persons with disabilities.

The center is located in Cainta Rizal which is about 15 kms. East Manila. It has five workshops, six Dormitories for trainees who came from far provinces. It is a rehabilitation and skills training center with sheltered workshops where the people with disabilities are trained to be productive and self-reliant member of the society.

 


Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Programme

TWHI’s CBR programme, which is active in all 13 municipalities of Rizal province plus the city of Antipolo. TWHI promotes CBR as service delivery for persons with disabilities. They encourage municipal and barangay (village) leaders to adopt CBR through orientations on CBR and to widen their understanding on disability issues through orientations on disability laws and the UNCRPD.

TWHI’s CBR programme is essentially focusing on outreach services to depressed communities in Rizal. Services provided include medical and mobility aid assistance, livelihood seminars and educational assistance for students with disabilities and children of persons with disabilities. TWHI fieldworkers assist in the development of associations of persons with disabilities in each of the municipalities it serves, mainly for income generating purposes.

TWHI provides mobility devices, such as wheelchairs and crutches, to indigent persons with disabilities that may or may not be under their CBR programme. These wheelchairs are produced in TWHI’s metalcraft department, which is one of the five divisions of TWHI’s sheltered workshop. TWHI also has a centre-based physical therapy clinic which provides physical therapy services to TWHI residents and nearby communities.
