Amref Health Africa (formerly AMREF - the African Medical and Research Foundation) teams up with African communities to create lasting health change.

And, they work with some of the most marginalized and vulnerable communities in Africa to make sure they have access to good health care.

Amref Health Africa, the largest African-led international organization on the continent, provides training and health services to 35 countries in Africa. Founded in 1957 as the Flying Doctors of East Africa to bring critical health services to remote communities, Amref Health Africa works with communities to deliver preventative, community-based health care.

With a focus on women and children, Amref Health Africa manages a full range of medical and public health programmes tackling the most critical health challenges facing the continent: maternal and child care, HIV, TB, malaria, clean water and sanitation and surgical and clinical outreach.

Amref Health Africa in Canada

Amref Health Africa in Canada provides program oversight and management, raises funds and engages Canadians on African health issues. In Canada, Amref Health Africa is led by an Executive Director and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors  composed of diverse Canadians who oversee and ensure due diligence in financial performance, management and growth.

Amref Health Africa has won highly-regarded international awards for their innovation, expertise, and ability to make lasting change: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Award for Global Health, and the Hilton Humanitarian Award.

They are making a difference each and every day partnering with African communities. Some examples of what they accomplished in 2015:

-Amref Health Africa reached more than 9 million people.
-Amref Health Africa provided free medical specialist and surgical treament to 22,999 people
-Amref Health Africa provided health-focused training to 115,753 people. 

Amref Health Africa has country offices in Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Senegal, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

In total, they work in 35 countries across Africa.
