NACOPHA is the umbrella organization established by People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLHIV) to serve as the Apex body and ultimate voice to advocate for issues and concerns of the PLHIV in Tanzania. It was founded in August 2003 and was registered in September 2005.
Currently the Council works with more than 13 PLHIV networks and 154 PLHIV districts clusters NACOPHA has a secretariat comprising of both highly skilled technical and administrative staff that coordinate and manage resources received from various partners including Government and Development Partners to support the implementation of the Organization's activities and Programs. The secretariat is headed by the Chief Executive officer who oversees and provides strategic and management leadership and is accountable for managing the organization funds. The Board of Directors provides oversight to the secretariat and Implementation of the Organization's performance. The Board of Directors reports to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is the highest policy and decision making body of NACOPHA.
NACOPHA has its headquarters office in Dar es Salaam that facilitates smooth coordination of PLHIV projects/programs and Partners within the country. Moreover, NACOPHA implements its programs through the PLHIV Cluster and network member organizations.
NACOPHA has a wide experience in using rights based approach with the aim of bringing together the rights holders and duty bearers in understanding their roles and responsibilities in providing quality services to PLHIV. NACOPHA values greatly; involvement of youths, Women empowerment and Men living with HIV as key strategies in implementing the projects.
NACOPHA in collaboration with National PLHIV Clusters and networks has been able to undertake the following activities: Building the capacity of PLHIV Clusters and networks, Advocacy, sensitization, awareness raising, community outreach and operational research as per identified needs.
Given the vast experience and capacity that NACOPHA has in coordinating and managing funds and sub grants received from the various development partners, currently, NACOPHA is implementing programs and projects funded from the support of American People( USAID), UN Family, TACAIDS and GLOBAL FUND. In previous years NACOPHA received fund support from GLIA, RFE, ACTIONAID, UNITAID, EGPAF, and GNP+ just to mention a few.
