Acting for Women in Distressing Situations (AFESIP) Cambodia

AFESIP Cambodia is a legally registered non-governmental, non-partisan, and non-religious organization that cares for and secures the rights of women and girls victimized by human trafficking and sex slavery.  It was established at the grass-roots level in 1996 because of the dire situations of thousands of victims forced into exploitation in and across Cambodian borders.

Organisational goal: To provide and develop, in Cambodia, an appropriate response to the causes and consequences of trafficking for sexual exploitation of women and girls.

Organisational objectives

To develop and optimise prevention, assistance, rescue, repatriation, rehabilitation and
reintegration of women and girls victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation
To work with the Cambodian government in order to strengthen and encourage their
involvement in fighting trafficking and helping victims
To implement and materialise the regional network to fight against trafficking of human beings

AFESIP Cambodia also seeks to combat the causes and consequences of trafficking in persons for sexual exploitation through outreach work in HIV/ AIDS prevention, advocacy work, campaigning, and representation and participation in women’s issues at national, regional, and international forums.

What They Do

AFESIP Cambodia provides rescue, rehabilitation, and reintegration services to survivors of trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Outreach - An educational outreach program implemented by our team of trained social workers and Peer Education team members working with women and girls in the sex industry.

Medical Care and AFESIP Clinic in Phnom Penh - The Sovann Raksmey Clinic, also known as the AFESIP Clinic, offers free basic services to entertainment workers and the residents of our centers.

Psychological Care - Restoration of self-esteem and repair to damage in personal development is fundamental in the rehabilitation and reintegration process.  A counselor is employed at the AFESIP Clinic and the psychology team provides ongoing support to all residents in its centers beginning with an initial psychological assessment on arrival.

Rehabilitation and Vocational Training - AFESIP Cambodia has three Rehabilitation and Vocational Skills Training Centers to accommodate and rehabilitate survivors of trafficking, sexual exploitation, rape, and domestic violence.

Reintegration - Helping graduates of our training programs to re-enter the community through employment placement or the start of their own small business, with micro-grant and follow-up support for up to three years. Reintegrating a survivor back into the community and society is a long and complex process. One of AFESIP Cambodia's main objectives is to ensure survivors’ long-term financial independence after reintegration. AFESIP Cambodia works in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs and local authorities to ensure survivors can be provided with support for as long as it is needed.

Advocacy - AFESIP Cambodia aims to develop and increase the capacity of the Cambodian government to counter trafficking in persons. Through the organization’s extensive and comprehensive work in the area of trafficking over the past years, AFESIP Cambodia has acquired significant knowledge about all aspects of the issue. AFESIP is keen to share this knowledge with the government and other key stakeholders in an attempt to combat trafficking in persons.
