Ujamaa Community Resource Team (UCRT)

Their Mission is to promote and enhance communities’ capacity to improve their livelihoods and to sustainably manage their natural resources.

Their Vision is one of improved livelihoods for pastoralists, hunter-gatherers and agro-pastoralist communities through social justice and sustainable natural resource management.

They are a non-profit environmental and social justice organization. We empower marginalised indigenous groups to secure rights to their natural resources and land in order to improve their livelihoods.

They promote resilient, egalitarian, empowered communities that are responsible for their own development and are better able to benefit from and steward their environment for future generations.

Their programs focus on six key areas:

Land Rights
Natural Resource Management
Community Capacity Building
Women’s Empowerment
Advocacy
Education

Their work impacts over 300,000 pastoralists and hunter-gatherers in Northern Tanzania

UCRT supports local communities to improve their livelihoods by controlling, managing and benefiting from their lands through sustainable natural resource management. They work with eight different ethnic groups in over 83 villages spread across eight districts of Northern Tanzania. As a principle, all of their activities are formally structured as collaborations with communities.

They work to empower communities to secure legal rights over their lands and natural resources. They believe that building the skills, knowledge and management capacity within these communities and households is crucial for allowing these communities to take advantage of the economic and livelihood opportunities afforded by these resources. Together with their partners they help to enable communities to make wise and informed choices about how they manage their resources in a world where social and ecological sustainability challenges only continue to grow.

They are committed to catalyzing positive change in people’s livelihoods, promoting environmental stewardship and enhancing the sense of community. By empowering local communities to improve their livelihoods through sustainable resource management, they are helping protect their incredible northern Tanzanian landscapes.
