Water for People

Water For People, an international nonprofit development organization, helps people in developing countries improve quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education programs. Water For People helps people in developing countries improve quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education programs.

Water For People currently works in 11 countries around the world: Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, and India. Our employees in-country know the culture, language, and communities they serve. However, based on special grants and funding, they have worked in more than 40 other countries over the years but have found that a targeted approach is more effective and efficient.

Water For People typically works in rural areas, where the need is greatest for water and sanitation solutions.

However, Water For People also works just outside of larger urban areas (peri-urban areas) and within urban areas themselves. In peri-urban areas, such as the Makata community outside of Blantyre, Malawi, the infrastructure for water and sanitation services was never built in the first place. Water For People also works in urban areas in Honduras helping to support systems that already exist. Regardless of geography, the work is done in single households, in communities, and in schools.

VISION

A world where every person has access to reliable and safe water and sanitation services.

MISSION

Water For People exists to promote the development of high-quality drinking water and sanitation services, accessible to all, and sustained by strong communities, businesses, and governments.

VALUES

Their values are based on demonstrating integrity in all they do.

> Accountability – to communities, partners and each other
> Courage – to innovate, to risk, to lead
> Empowerment – of citizens, families and local institutions
> Partnership – on the ground, in the sector and at all levels of government
> Transparency – in what they do, what it costs and what is working

HOW THEY WORK

Field Partners - Water For People collaborates with a variety of field partners who work with them to support, plan, create, and follow up on their programmatic work in communities. Because of their guiding principle to “Keep Good Company,” they select their partners with care and work to train, coach, and build their capacity. This ensures that they will excel in their work both with Water For People and with the other NGOs with whom they work.

Initiatives - Their initiatives cross a wide variety of arenas and are at the heart of our innovative thinking and innovations. They think about what will last, what is locally supported and they act on those ideas. They have a variety of initiatives that demonstrate a new way of creating success and a new way of monitoring their successes over time. Rather than focus on singular technological solutions they look at the entire system. And that’s what will create change for the people on the ground.

Monitoring - They have a responsibility to those they serve to make sure their investments last. They are the only organization that guarantees at least 10 years of post-project monitoring in the areas they work.
