History

CCFC's roots date back to the late 1930s, when American Presbyterian missionary, Dr. J. Calvitt Clarke, along with Dr. Verent Mills, began working with Chinese war orphans. Moved by their suffering, Dr. Clarke created China's Children Fund (CCF) in 1938. Less than a decade later, Mills joined as regional director in Shanghai. Born in Birmingham, England, and raised in Winnipeg, Canada, Mills had been a missionary in South China since the early 1930s.

In the 1950s, the organization expanded its work from Asia into the Middle East in the aftermath of the Second World War and renamed itself Christian Children's Fund. By the 1960s, CCF had a global reach, and growing Canadian support led to the creation of Christian Children's Fund of Canada.
