Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC)

The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) is a global multi-stakeholder partnership and membership organisation that works to save lives and improve livelihoods. It does so by enhancing collaboration among sector agencies and professionals who are working to improve access for the 2.5 billion people without safe sanitation and the 783 million people without clean drinking water. Through its work, WSSCC contributes to the broader goals of poverty eradication, health and environmental improvement, gender equality and long-term social and economic development. WSSCC has coalitions in more than 20 countries, members in more than 160 countries, and a Geneva-based Secretariat which is a unit of UNOPS (United Nations Office for Project Services).

The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council's vision is of a world where everybody has sustained water supply, sanitation and hygiene.

WSSCC, together with its Members, staff, partners and donors, strives to achieve this vision. Such a vision is centered upon a belief that sanitation, hygiene and water supply coverage is a universal human right; that people and communities are catalysts of change and can be the focus of transformative action; and that the impact of sound sanitation and hygiene will positively benefit people’s health, dignity, security, livelihoods, as well economic status.

Strategy

WSSCC is committed to contributing substantially to global efforts to improve sanitation and hygiene for vulnerable sections of society, with a special focus on communities in Africa and Asia. To focus on its global efforts from 2012-2016, WSSCC has established four practical outcomes, as follows:

ACCESS AND USE – Tens of millions of unserved people in 10-15 sanitation-needy countries gain access to and sustainably use improved sanitation and adopt safe hygienic behaviours
EQUITY – Among those who gain access, poor and marginalized people and groups are identified and preferentially supported
INVOLVEMENT – More individuals, organizations and businesses become involved in sanitation and hygiene work
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS – Individuals and agencies working in sanitation and hygiene improve their knowledge and skills
