Jane Goodall Institute

The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is an international wildlife and environment conservation organization headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, with branches in many countries. Founded in 1977 by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall and Genevieve di San Faustino, the Jane Goodall Institute is a global nonprofit that empowers people to make a difference for all living things. JGI works builds on Dr. Goodall’s scientific work and her humanitarian vision. Specifically, JGI seeks to:

Improve global understanding and treatment of great apes through research, public education and advocacy
Contribute to the preservation of great apes and their habitats by combining conservation with education and promotion of sustainable livelihoods in local communities
Create a worldwide network of young people who have learned to care deeply for their human community, for all animals and for the environment, and who will take responsible action to care for them

JGI's main offices are in the United States, but it has sister offices around the world, in countries including Australia, Italy, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, while its Gombe Stream Research Center is located in Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania.

African Programs

Since the early 1990s, the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) has recognized that protecting the environment and species can no longer remain separate from the task of improving the human condition.  Rapidly increasing destruction of forests and the pressures of growing populations mean that reaching individual farmers and villagers is key to conservation success.  That’s why, in African chimpanzee range countries, JGI works to build the capacity of rural communities to be self-sustaining in ways that enable them to prosper economically and culturally, while protecting the natural resources on which their long-term prosperity depends.

JGI’s work is distinguished by its participatory, systems-based approach, successfully mobilizing people to adopt new behaviors and practices to serve themselves and the broader landscape they rely on to survive.  We apply this approach across multiple sectors, from agriculture and health to education and micro-credit.
