Transparency International Australia (TIA)

TI Australia (TIA) is part of a global coalition to fight corruption and promote transparency, integrity and accountability at all levels and across all sectors of society, including in government.

TIA was launched in March 1995 to raise awareness of corruption in Australia and to initiate moves to combat it. TIA believes that corruption is one of the greatest challenges of the contemporary world. Corruption undermines good government, distorts public policy, leads to the misallocation of resources, harms private and public sector development and particularly hurts the poor. It drives economic inequality and is a major barrier in poverty eradication. Tackling corruption is only possible with the cooperation of a wide range of stakeholders. We engage with the private sector, government and civil society to build coalitions against corruption. Coalitions against corruption will help shape a world in which government, politics, business, civil society and the daily lives of people are free of corruption.

TI Australia is the national chapter of Transparency International (TI), the global coalition against corruption, with a presence in over 100 countries. TIA fully supports TI’s Vision, Objectives and Guiding Principles and Mission and Strategy.

TI Australia’s members include some of Australia’s largest companies, as well as organisations from the development sector. TI Australia’s Cornerstone Partners are leaders in their sector who choose to be at the forefront of integrity in business and publicly demonstrate their commitment to reducing corruption in all its forms. Support also comes from companies with international business interests, the accounting, legal and engineering professions, the academic community, enforcement agencies, political leaders, and non-governmental organisations. They also have a growing group of committed individual members.

Strategy and Plan

Transparency International Australia works to support the TI Strategy 2020.

Their key focus is on achieving government reform in Australia, strengthened integrity systems, promoting responsible business conduct, fostering active citizenship engagement, and building a strong organisation to support a coalition against corruption.

Their work will focus on critical issues including:

- Combatting Foreign Bribery, Illicit Financial Flows, and Money Laundering
- Whistleblower protection
- Strengthened disclosure, including Beneficial Ownership
- Anti-Corruption agencies and regulation; and
- Mining licencing regimes and corruption vulnerability

They will do this through strengthened community and stakeholder engagement and by working with networks, coalitions, civil society and individuals to understand the adverse impacts of bribery and corruption, and drive change.
