Tanzania Women's Media Association - TAMWA

The Tanzania Media Women’s Association (TAMWA) is a non-profit sharing, non-governmental and non-partisan organisation registered under the Societies Ordinance on 17th of November 1987 with registration number SO 6763. The Association in 2004 complied with the new NGO law of 2002. Tamwa has two offices in Dar -es- Salaam and Zanzibar. Zanzibar office located at Mombasa area near SOS is rented, but the office in Dar -es-Salaam situated at Sinza-Mori, along Shekilango Road, Kijitonyama, Kinondoni District, is Association's property. The founder members of TAMWA are; Fatma Alloo, Edda Sanga, Leila Sheikh, Rose Haji, Ananilea Nkya, Valerie Msoka, Pili Mtambalike, Elizabeth Marealle, Rose Kalemera, Jamilla Chipo, Nellie Kidela and Halima Shariff. Currently the Association has over 100 members with a minimum qualification of Diploma in Journalism and three years work experience in the media industry. Members are working in public and private media houses as editors, reporters, programme managers, producers, public relations and communication officers. The AGM is the supreme organ of the Association but it delegates its powers our to the GB which meets four times a year to evaluate the performance of the Secretariat an organ to execute day today activities of the Association.

Expected outputs

The expected outputs of the TAMWA interventions for the coming Six years include:

Reduced poverty among women in targeted area.
Reduced school pregnancies, child marriages, FGM, abandonment of women and children, maternal mortality and poverty in women in targeted  areas.
Enhanced public awareness  and action against  corruption in all its forms and levels.
Increased participation of women in  decision-making levels.
Improved maternal health.
Increased awareness on impact of gender based violence and HIV infection among women.
The amendment and /or repeal of bad laws that impact negatively on well being of women and children.
