Association Angkor-Belgique (AAB)

In 1988, at the initiative of Dr. Ngor who offers for the occasion part of the gains from his role in the film, the association "The Children of Angkor" is created in France. It sprouted in the mind of a Belgian who worked in Cambodian refugee camps in Thailand and knew Aing Ngor. This association aims to support Cambodian children - orphans or from particularly poor backgrounds - through an individual sponsorship system.

The same year, a Belgian television channel presents "Killing Fields". Following the film, a debate brings together various stakeholders, including Dr. Ngor. The idea was born to create a sister association in Belgium, always with the help of the Cambodian doctor. On October 12, 1989, the statutes of the "Children of Angkor-Belgium" appeared in the Moniteur belge and, a few days later, Dr. Ngor gave a press conference in Brussels; very quickly, the first requests for information arrive as well as the first referrals.

The "take-off" of the Association Angkor-Belgique occurs in December 1991 during the broadcast of the program "Vent du Sud", devoted to childhood Cambodian. This show highlights the work of the Belgian association, whose representatives are on the set. Dr. Ngor is also involved, as is Nop Sideth, a Cambodian refugee in Brussels, as well as the French and Belgian founders of the association.

Little by little, the Belgian association has grown and structured itself, to reach a milestone: it becomes independent of its French sister by decision adopted on July 20, 1996 and takes the name of Association Angkor-Belgium, of which the statutes are published in the Moniteur. Its primary objective remains the same: to provide poor children with access to education, one of the fundamental rights of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child.
