Human Rights Network Uganda (HURINET-U)

Human Rights Network Uganda (HURINET–U) is a network of Human Rights organizations that was established in 1993 by a group of eight human rights organisations and was formally registered as an independent, non partisan and non for profit organization in 1994. The identity of HURINET-U lies with an increased diverse membership of  Non Governmental Organisations across the country. Membership is drawn from national and international organisations that are committed to a wide range of Human Rights issues which are complementary in terms of areas of focus including Child Rights, Women Rights, Peace and Conflict Resolution,  Civil and Political Rights. 

HURINET-U Member Organisations

The identity of HURINET-U lies with its diverse membership which currently stands at 53 members. Membership is drawn from organizations that are committed to a wide range of human rights issues which are complementary in terms of areas of focus including; civil and political rights, economic social and political rights, child rights, gender and women’s issues, peace building and conflict resolution, prisoners’ rights, refugee rights and labor rights. Members are purely Ugandan NGOs. The membership of HURINET-U is currently organized into five thematic clusters each with a convener and co-convener for purposes of shared leadership of the network.

The membership of HURINET–U is currently organized into five thematic clusters, each with a convener and co–convener for purposes of shared leadership of the network. These clusters are:

Women’s Rights; Child Rights; Civil and Political Rights; Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; Peace and Conflict Resolution. HURINET–U works with and through various coalitions to implement its programme. Currently, HURINET–U hosts the following coalitions;

i. National Coalition on Human Rights Defenders Uganda
ii. National Coalition on Transitional Justice
iii. Uganda Coalition on the International Criminal Court
iv. National Coalition on Police Accountability & Security Sector Reform
v. Human Rights Education Coalition
vi. Economic, Social & Cultural Rights Coalition
vii. Coalition on Freedom of Information

HURINET–U also coordinates the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Platform and provides technical support to the UN Global Compact Local Network hosted by the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE).

The National Coalition on Human Rights Defenders (NCHRD–U) Coalition is hosted by HURINET–U but in transition to becoming an independent entity.

Mission Statement:

HURINET–U is the national network of human rights organisations in Uganda,promoting the human rights agenda through linking and strengthening the capacity of member organisations and advancing the human rights movement for collective advocacy at national, regional and international levels.
