Church World Service (CWS)

CWS has worked for seven decades with one goal: building a world where there is enough for all. They affirm the power of individuals and communities to take ownership of their future. They meet them right where they are, helping them create solutions they can maintain – and build on. That means a refugee family who is able to start a new life. Or someone rebuilding after disaster finds safety with dignity.

They believe that there is enough food, water and justice for everyone in the world. Their work to build alliances among faith groups, civil society, advocates and those in need, and provide programs and services that are impactful, is as critical now as it ever has been. In the past year alone, they've been able to make differences in tens of thousands of lives in more than 30 countries.

Church World Service was born in 1946, in the aftermath of World War II. Seventeen denominations came together to form an agency “to do in partnership what none of us could hope to do as well alone.” The mission: Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, comfort the aged, shelter the homeless.

Their work in development

The cycle of poverty can end. Empowering vulnerable women, men and children to grow their own potential is key. They work with communities to identify their various needs and accompany them as they craft and maintain sustainable, local solutions. While a CWS program may be classified as ‘food security,’ the overall focus is much broader than one particular issue.

Their global development programs turn potential into reality in a continuum of care. One community, one family, one precious child at a time.

Emergencies

CWS provides help in crises, immediately and in the long term.

Food security

CWS ensures communities have reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.

Water

Everyone needs water to survive. CWS helps makes sure water is safe to drink and is reasonably accessible.

Women and children

Women and children are impacted most when resources are scarce. Focusing on their needs is essential.
