| The Government of The Bahamas has received financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and intends to apply part of the proceeds to payments under the project Trade Sector Support Programme, for a vulnerability study of acceding to the WTO. The Bahamas first made application to join the WTO in 2001 but has accelerated efforts in recent times. The economy of The Bahamas is based largely on tourism services and the financial services sector. Both are largely owned by non-Bahamians. The Government seeks a study which analyzes how joining the WTO will impact the economy as barriers to trade in goods and services are reduced. The goals of the study are as follows: the identification of those sectors most vulnerable; recommendations on how such vulnerabilities might be mitigated; and to identify industries that can take advantage of WTO accession. | ||||
