MSD-Wellcome Trust Hilleman Laboratories is a unique joint venture between the Wellcome Trust and Merck & Co. Inc., with a not-for-profit mission to focus on developing affordable vaccines for diseases that commonly affect low-income countries.

Launched in 2009, the pairing by the two world's pre-eminent healthcare institutions provides an opportunity to integrate the best of both, to drive the investment and expertise needed to develop and deliver affordable vaccines.

Their expertise in medical research is targeted toward creating new vaccines in areas of unmet need as well as adapting existing vaccines for more effective delivery in low income nations. Numerous barriers hamper access to live-saving vaccines for millions of people living in the developing world. First, the lack of commercial return has limited private sector investment in new solutions for diseases that predominately affect low income countries. Secondly, many licensed vaccines available in the market today were developed and manufactured with industrialized world citizens in mind.

Hilleman Laboratories aims to create a novel immunization platform by employing modern technologies focusing on: Thermostability, Ease-of-administration, Reduced Footprint and Affordability

Hilleman Laboratories will invest the majority of its resources in the research and clinical assessment of vaccines against strains of diseases prevalent in the developing world, (which bears 90% of the global burden of disease) Additionally, Hilleman Laboratories will forge partnerships with governments, policy makers, multilateral and international organizations, public-private sector, research and technical institutes, NGOs, philanthropic organizations and other like-minded institutions. Hilleman Laboratories seeks to collaborate, exchange ideas and build a meaningful dialogue and advocacy platform for vaccine discovery to ultimately strengthen public health systems and immunization programs in developing countries over the long-term.

Hilleman Labotaries located at Jamia Hamdard University in New Delhi includes GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) compliant R&D laboratories focused on bacterial fermentation, cell culture, downstream processing and formulation. Their R&D center also taps new innovation and technologies to explore promising research concepts for improving immunization conditions in developing countries.
