ActionAid Tanzania

ActionAid International Tanzania is a non-political, non-religious organisation that started as a cross-border programme in 1998 and became a full-fledged country programme in 2000.

In 2010 former MS Tanzania, a Danish organisation that started out as a Danish Volunteer Service in Tanzania in 1963, merged with ActionAid International Tanzania.

In 2011 ActionAid International Tanzania saw its graduation from a country program into an Associate member of ActionAid International with the launch of its national board, which was inaugurated by AAI’s Chief Executive, Joanna Kerr.

This will enhance ActionAid International Tanzania’s governance system, legitimacy and accountability to the poor and global alliance and partnership with the rest of ActionAid.

What We Do

We focus on the people that others forget. People in poverty. People who face discrimination. People whose voices are ignored.

We help people fight for the rights that they are denied. Simple things, like the right to eat. The right to stay on their land. To an education. To have a say in the decisions that shape their lives.

We’re not about giving handouts or telling people what to do, because in the long run we know that doesn’t work. Instead, we use our resources, influence and experience to help people find their own solutions.

We listen to what people really want and need. We help communities take action together to hold their governments to account, and we give local organisations our support where they need it. Together, we’re making a lasting difference.

Our strategic objective is to work with the poor and marginaised communities so as to strengthen their capacity to advocate for international and national policies that promote their rights to a world without poverty. Our areas of work are in agriculture and food security, land rights, education, HIV/AIDS, just and democratic governance and women's rights.

Women's rights - 70% of people living in poverty are women. Women around the world are more likely to live in poverty - just because they are women.
HIV and AIDS - ActionAid Tanzania's work on HIV/AIDS seeks to empower communities, especially the poor and excluded, and their organizations to addressn HIV prevention; advocate for access to treatment and improve access and availability of care and support for People Living with HIV/AIDS.
Governance - Fair and accountable government is crucial to ending poverty and promoting human rights in Tanzania
Food Rights - Every day, one in six people goes to bed hungry. Yet the world produces more than enough food for everybody. We’re tackling the causes of hunger, so that everyone can enjoy the right to have enough to eat.
Education - In Tanzania, ActionAid addresses the challenges in order to ensure access to quality education for all Tanzanians.
