Yamuna

We are part of a non-confessional organisation founded by a group of people that believed on a fairer world. We set up YAMUNA feeling like a troop of tiny ants with the conviction that joining our efforts together we would be able to reach very far. We were persuaded that however little we could do, the effort was worthwhile.. With your help we realise that we are reaching more and more people now and it is fair.

Yamuna was founded in the year 2000 in Barcelona (Spain) as a Non Governmental Organisation focused on Development: it is registered on the Register Book of Barcelona with Entry No 24168, Section 1 and Identification No G-62352042 of the Registry of Associations, General Direction of Legal organisations and Law, and on the Registry of Private Foundations of the Regional Government of Catalonia with Entry No 2260 and Identification No G-64261209.

OUR MISSION

Our efforts and task are focused on the family integration of children and teenagers in need; we provide them with the necessary means for a better life.

In order to attain this goal, our action is founded on:

-Residential care for children whose families are in deep hardship. We look after them for the period required and we help their families improve their situation so that their children can get back to them.

-Support for single mothers and their children with no financial means, no jobs and usually illiterate. We provide them with professional training and help them find a job in proper conditions. The objective is to acquire the necessary means to keep their families together.

Yamuna’s action is deployed mainly in Madagascar where several development programs are implemented.

We believe in a better life for everyone. We all should get involved to improve the present and future of people living in need.

OUR GOALS

In Yamuna we try to contribute to the reduction of the poverty conditions of many people in Madagascar. Our action is focused on social and economic reinsertion of women as well as on child protection through health, nutrition and education activities.

With these objectives in mind, we have set up a programme for social and work integration aimed at impoverished people living in the verge of society; we provide them with the means to meet basic needs so that they can live a safe life. We also provide a home for children whose families are in difficulty. We look after these children for as long as they need it and we lend a hand to their families so that they can get back together the sooner as possible.

Many people living in rural areas move to urban areas in search of better conditions for their children but once there they get trapped in worse conditions: less food at their reach and less possibilities to find a job due to their basic formal education. They become part of the big lot of unskilled workers that are unemployed. Besides, the links with their families back in the countryside get broken leaving them outside the solidarity network so paramount for survival.

The amount of single mothers, most of them very young, has risen too. It is usually the case of women with none or very basic education, that have been abandoned or badly treated by their partners. In conclusion, the poor living in rough areas of big cities as Antananarivo (Madagascar),suffer in many occasions, on top of their extreme poverty, from deep isolation brought about by non-existent family support and communal solidarity. They are exposed to high-risk situations such as violence and criminality –rooted in such misery conditions-, family break-downs, marriage break-ups, prostitution, teenage pregnancy, undesired children and so on. These situations, together with misery, lead children into hunger, deprivation and disease..
