Inter Pares

Inter Pares was founded in 1975 on a commitment to address conflict and injustice in Canada and around the world. We believe that this is our responsibility as Canadians, and that we must do so by collaborating with and supporting the struggles for justice of people around the world.

Inter Pares works with social change organizations around the world who share our analysis that poverty and injustice are caused by inequalities between and among nations, and who are working to promote social and economic justice in their communities and societies. To get a better sense of what kinds of organizations we work with, please consult past editions of our Bulletin, or click to see who we work with in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Canada.

We contribute in many ways to these relationships of common cause:

we raise funds and political support from the Canadian government and public, as well as from other organizations;
we connect our colleagues with others who are struggling with the same issues, often through building transnational coalitions;
we offer our political and programmatic perspective from thirty-five years of working around the world;
we support women’s leadership through our feminist approach;
we systematically seek opportunities to engage the Canadian government on its policies and programs; and
we carry out public education here at home.

What We Do

Inter Pares supports communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Canada to create sustainable livelihoods and healthy futures. We support people's struggles for self-determination and their efforts to challenge structural obstacles to achieving social justice, accompanying people in their efforts to hold their governments accountable and to promote democratic social and economic policies. Through advocacy and coalition-building, Inter Pares also links social action at home with social change work abroad, promoting relationships of mutual support among activists around the globe.

Inter Pares and our counterparts are currently working on the issues of:

Migration
Violence against women
Peace and democracy
control over resources
Health
Food sovereignty
Economic justice

Inter Pares brings a holistic perspective to these concerns, however, recognizing the interrelations between them. The thread that connects our work is citizen participation - strengthening the capacity of people and communities, especially the most marginalized, to influence the social, economic, and political structures that affect their lives.
