The Salvation Army Papua New Guinea Territory

The Salvation Army is an international movement based on Christian principles.  Currently The Salvation Army is active and engaged in 125 countries.  The Salvation Army provides countless social and spiritual services on a global scale to help people find freedom.

The Salvation Army officially commenced in Papua New Guinea on 31st August, 1956. The first officers appointed to work in PNG were Major Keith and Mrs Major Edna Baker, and Lieut Ian Cutmore (now retired commissioner).

PNG was part of the Australia Eastern Territory for 38 years until it became an independent command on 4th July, 1994. It gained territorial status on 9th December, 2000.

In 2005, as the Army was approaching 50 years of service in PNG, the first national officers were appointed as territorial leaders: Colonels Andrew and Julie Kalai. Colonel Julie died in October 2006, while Commissioner Andrew Kalai remained as the territorial commander until his retirement in January 2013. Colonels Andy & Yvonne Westrupp are the current territorial commanders.

Services

Health Services - The Salvation Army to be part of the fight against HIV/AIDS in the country.  It fits well with the way we operate – the compassionate heart of the Army can find much expression through our Houses of Hope.  Classes for AIDS orphans for example are conducted at Ela Beach, along with Drop-In opportunities for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Settlement Ministries - The Salvation Army is aware that there are a great many unchurched people in the city, and the urban drift has contributed to so many social issues in the settlements. A holistic approach. Including worship, literacy, kids programs, gardening, basic health education, fellowship and home league amongst the activities.

The Settlement ministry team has been developed to help these people who are in great need. The conviction that drives The Salvation Army and its personnel has been captured in the words “Heart to God & Hand to Man”

Salvation Army Emergency Services - The Salvation Army in PNG has responded well to major/national disasters in recent years.

Education and schools - The Salvation Army Papua New Guinea provides good quality Christian education to over 3700 children and young adults.  This takes place both through community Elementary Schools, fee paying private Primary Schools, fee-paying Secondary Schools, FODE and Computer Schools, Childcare Centre and a Literacy program.
